Let Susuru Take you to the Land of the Rising Sun


After a few bites from the hot but juicy fresh-from-the-pan gyoza and  authentic unagi maki at this new Japanese restaurant, against a backdrop of Japanese images and Japanese art, I already felt I was in the land of the rising sun.   Susuru is the newly opened quaint Japanese restaurant at the Pop Up Katipunan.   


Susuru stands for 'to slurp,'  a gesture when eating noodles which in turn creates a sound  because someone is eating with gusto and excitement.  Of course, this is to the delight of the chef, as this shows how the eater appreciates the meal.   To some cultures, this manner of eating is rude, however, when eating noodles in Japan, slurping is acceptable.   



Japanese food lovers can enjoy flavorful and authentic food varieties that will surely make every foodie's tummy filled with Japanese goodness, just like this sashimi set.  Each mouthful is an experience of different flavors, from the wasabe and soy sauce and the vegetables, and fresh fish.  All combine to make each slice wonderfully tasteful.  



Behold the famous susuru gyoza,  under the expert hands of Chef John Gaffud, this common Japanese treat became unforgettable and iconic to me.  This is a must-try and not to be missed part of susuru's menu.




What is Japanese cuisine without the 'rolls'?   With a variety of options to choose from, you will definitely find your favorite.  Like this dragon roll and shrimp tempura roll.   One of the things I like about maki or rolls is they are a complete rice meal already.   So you can just order a side dish or a soup to complete the course.  And don't forget the beverage.  Susuru offers Japanese beer and sake which just ranges from P100 to P400.  So affordable especially for the academic community around the area.



Definitely the star of the night for me, the unagi maki. The soft and tender flesh of the eel which is similar to a crab's matches the sauce and the other ingredients to make the entire experience very unforgettable.  This would really make me come back to Susuru again and again.  The P375 is just about reasonable for this.


For meat lovers, this barbecue is the treat just for you.  
It's well seasoned, and just really soft to the bite.  
This is great for children too.   Family nights can be spent here as there are many things  to do and see at the Pop Up, and a food I can recommend to kids is this 'yaki-meal'. And it is reasonably priced too.  

Susuru is open from 11 AM to 12 AM on Sunday until Thursday while on Fridays and Saturdays, they are open from 11AM to 2AM.
