How To Make a Great Hot Pot or Shabu-Shabu -- by Huat Pot

Whenever the 'ber' months would begin, we could feel the air getting chilly, especially in the early mornings and early evenings.   And on seasons like this, we look for something to warm us up.  Some people want to drink hot chocolate.  Others drink their favorite flavor of coffee, or tea. While others make a mad dash for their favorite noodle house for a bowl of their favorite noodles.  One kind of food that is just fit for the 'ber' months is the hot pot.   And one place where we can get quality hot pot is the Huat Pot which is located in Greenhills, San Juan.  I've been to Huat Pot thrice already and each time I go there, the experience just gets better.   Not only is the food great, the interior is also well-designed that you don't come out smelling smoky or kind of smelling of food.

It is easy to make a great hot pot, but Huat Pot has this easy-to-do hot pot for their customers:  1) Order soup first and let it boil.  The most popular ones are beef or laksa. Laksa is a very popular noodle soup of Chinese and Malay origin and very common in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

2)  Make your own sauce while waiting for the soup to boil. There is a sauce section in the buffet area, simply make your own sauce (or ask for the assistance of the waiters) Just don't forget to mix a piece of egg in the sauce to make it thicker and of course, healthier.

3)  You may add flavor to your soup by simply putting in the ingredients of your choice from the buffet area. Huat Pot orders most of their ingredients from Taiwan.  This is the veggie section.

And this is the seafood area.  It is constantly replenished and they are kept fresh by ice cubes.

This is an example of some ingredients taken from the vegetable section.  There is spinach, baby corn, tofu,  ube balls, leek, etc.  Simply put these all in the boiling soup as additional flavor to your hot pot. Do not overcook.  You only have to wait for 3 minutes and you may get a bowl from the pot.

Complete your Huat Pot experience by their house special -- taho or Magnum ice cream. Or by some fresh fruits.

Huat pot also has some rice meals like braised pork with salted fish.  According to Chef Jonas, who is also one of the proprietors, this particular recipe comes from his grandma.  It is mouth-watering and the combination of pork oil and salted fish is beyond description.

Huat Pot is located at: 2nd Floor Metropoint Ctr. P. Guevarra cor. Wilson St. Greenhills, San Juan.  You may call them at their landline: 650-3091 or mobile:  0915-480-5500, for reservations.
