My Puerto Prinsesa Holiday: Island Hopping at Honda Bay
Because Palawan in itself is an archipelago, island hopping is an activity that should not be skipped. Each island in the entire archipelago has a distinct characteristic. So on the second day, Honda Bay was my destination.
Honda Bay is the gateway to Starfish Island, Lu-li (lulubog-lilitaw island), Snake Island and Pandan Island. It is located at Bgy. Sta. Lourdes, the rainstick capital of Puerto Prinsesa. Legend tells that the natives of yore used the rainstick in requesting for rain from the gods. Nowadays, this product from bamboo, is a popular gift and decorative item.
The rainmaker produces a sound similar to that of the sea rushing to shore. It is very soothing and helps reduce stress and tension. The price of the rainmaker depends on its length and size, small ones are P15.00. Some are more beautifully decorated, so expect a higher price for them.
The first stop of the island hopping is the famous Starfish Island. True to its name, a lot of the star-shaped creature of the sea abound in the island, it was so fascinating. In addition to the tranquility of the island, the fine sand and the beautiful scenery created by the contrasting colors of the sky and sea, is a picture that will linger on my mind.
The second stop of the island hopping is the Snake Island. There are no reptiles in the island, so don't be scared. It got its name from the sand bar that snakes out to sea.
The sand bar stretches out to sea, and encloses a marine sanctuary where island hoppers can feed fish.
Island-hoppers enjoy feeding fish which is a major activity in the island. Bread can be bought in the many sari-sari store in the island. You can even have a cup of coffee here. I just needed to get one to keep me awake.
And before heading back to Honda Bay, the final stop of the island-hopping is Pandan Island. This is the biggest among the three destinations and seemed to be more developed. Island hoppers can shower off the sea and sand with fresh water in this resort. We paid P25 for entrance fee to Pandan Island.
It also has more vegetation and more amenities compared to the other islands. I think it got its name from the seaweed that looks like pandan leaves. Pandan island has the coolest environment and atmosphere. This is probably due to the tall coconut trees and other medium-sized trees that wards off the scorching heat of the sun.
Back in Honda Bay, we stopped by the stalls that sell mementos and souvenir items and bought some for friends and folks back home.
